Welcome to ‘Flight’ Club
Lets get this off my chest, Try not to hate me. The thing is, I don’t think Denzel Washington is as great as everybody else thinks. The roles he picks are very safe. Most of his characters are likeable dudes in bad situations. I love Training Day, I love him in Training day. Will he ever be better than he was as Det. Alonso Harris? Probably not. Will he win an Oscar for best actor for Flight? Definitely not.
Flights biggest problem is the story, we are supposed to feel empathy for a pilot who gets wasted the night before he has to fly his commercial airliner and to solve his hangover the next day he shoots cocaine. I hate him already.
To cut a long story short he lands the plane after it starts falling apart mid-flight and saves most of the souls on board, despite being wasted.
He ends up in the same hospital as a heroin junkie who OD’ed while he was heroically landing the bucket of bolts and they become lovers even though Denz’s on/off girlfriend died on the plane. This relationship is very forced and when she decides to give his baddy leg a rub which turns into sex, I was a bit sick in my mouth.
Another annoyance of mine was the choice of soundtrack. A Girl shooting Heroin, they play “Under The Bridge”by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Jon Goodman delivering drugs and alcohol to Denzel- The Rolling Stones and Denz pouring away alcohol after deciding to quit drinking- Ain’t No Sunshine. Really, could you not pick a more clichéd selection?
The plane crash is AMAZING, Zemeckis has always revealed in using CGI and the plane crash looks and feels fantastic, I just felt let down by the story and characters.
It’s not an awful film by any stretch, it’s got some great moments. Don Chedle’s lawyer is a treat as well as Bruce Greenwood as the union rep. I just can’t help but feel that the academy want to highlight Robert Zemeckis’ return to live action films after 12 years away with a nomination of some sort, even if its only for his consistent as ever leading man.
Don’t take my word for it though, it’s in cinemas now. So make your own mind up and tell me what you thought!
Here’s a full list of the 2013 Oscar Nominations which are on Sunday 24th February.
