What is the Wilhelm Scream And Where Did It Come From?

It’s the sound effect that you’ve heard 100’s of times, it features in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Reservoir Dogs, Spider-Man, Kill Bill, Lord Of The Rings and 300.

Where did this sound effect come from? In 1951 it was first used in the film Distant Drums and was most likely voiced by actor Sheb Wooley.

The scream gained fame when sound designer Ben Burtt came across it and used in the Star Wars and Indiana Jones film. It’s now used as an In-Joke between sound designers and has worked it’s way into over 225 films.
