Morgan Freeman: Top 5 Performances

August 14, 2013 by Craig Sutherland

Ahh, Morgan Freeman. Apart from David Attenborough he’s your favourite nature film narrator, he’s the go to kind hearted side-kick (Unforgiven, Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves), detective (Se7en, Kiss The Girls) or president (Invictus, Deep Impact). He’s a Five time Oscar Nominee and one time winner (Million Dollar Baby), here’s my favourite performances of his…

5) Driving Miss Daisy

An old Jewish woman (Tandy) and her African-American chauffeur (Freeman) in the American South have a relationship that grows and improves over the years.

4) Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves

Maybe I’m seeing this through rose-tinted glasses but I love Freeman as Azzem in the 1991 Robin Hood, I’m not going to defend it…

3) Unforgiven

Morgan plays Clint Eastwood’s sidekick in this classic tale of how the west was actually won.

2) Se7en

Freeman plays a detective a few weeks from retirement who is saddled with the new guy (Brad Pitt) while they investigate a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as inspiration.

1) The Shawshank Redemption

Freeman finds time to bond with fellow inmate (Robbins) in this uplifting prison drama. Nominated for 7 Oscars, Shawshank is often seen as one of the greatest films of all time.

Freeman’s Top 5 films According to Rotten Tomatoes:

– Born To Be Wild 98% (Narrator)

– Unforgiven 96%

– March Of The Penguins 94% (Narrator)

– Gone Baby Gone 94%

– The Dark Knight 94%

Here’s some interesting facts about the man himself…

  • Worked as a mechanic in the US Air Force.
  • During an interview with Charlie Rose regarding the 10th year anniversary of The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Freeman said he regarded that film, Glory (1989), Driving Miss Daisy (1989), and Unforgiven (1992) as the highlights of his career.
  • He is often called the greatest living actor in film, a title he humbly waves off and says he is just “lucky.”
  • The only African-American actor/actress to appear in three Best Picture Oscar Winners: Driving Miss Daisy (1989), Unforgiven (1992) and Million Dollar Baby (2004).
  • Narrated 2 Academy Award-winning feature-length documentaries: The Long Way Home (1997) and March of the Penguins (2005).
